It is with great sadness and disappointment that I must now relate the following news story. As reported by Reuters News Service, Chris Wilson, the operator of the website where these images were originally posted, after being exonerated by the Army for posting the images, has now been arrested by the Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida on obscenity charges.

He may have been arrested for publishing pornography, something certainly many other Floridians not under arrest are engaged in. But, knowing the Internet and the literal sea of pornographic material of all kinds out there, does this quote ring true?

'"In my 33 years of law enforcement experience, this is one of the most horrific examples of filthy, obscene materials we have ever seized," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.

Both the timing and the attitude of the Polk County Sheriff's Office in making this arrest should trouble even the staunchest advocates of the War in Iraq.

What should deeply concern all in our country who believe in Free Speech, and in particular, that the exposure of the ill-advised, and even reckless, actions of our government, is the best, most necessary, and sometimes only way to keep our Democracy healthy and to maintain our position as the world's protector of Human Rights, both here and abroad, is how easily those rights can be subverted by those who disagree.

Is it not always the truth which pierces most deeply into the hearts of those who cannot or will not face it? And is it not always the ferocity of their response which exposes the depths of their wounds?

If we have become a nation which can no longer tolerate voices of dissent, especially when those voices raise the most serious questions our Democracy can face -- those of our actions in wartime -- if we cannot face the truth of who are, and where we are going as a society, if that truth must be whispered in the darkness, and never dared spoken out loud, then we must all share in the same grave danger: that we are not free, even in what we think is the safety of our own homes.

Suicide Bomber at Iraqi Army Post in Baghdad. He walked up on an Iraqi Army formation while he was dressed like an IA soldier and as he walked around the wall he blew up. I believe he killed 1 and wounded 4.
